This is the 54^th presidential election in American history. Whether Bush or Gore wins, this will be the closest election since 1884.

If Gore wins Florida, he will rank 45^th out of 54 in popular vote, and 49^th out of 54 in electoral vote.

If Bush manages to hold on in Florida, he will rank 47^th out of 54 in popular vote, and 53^rd out of 54^th in electoral vote. The only president lower in electoral vote will be John Quincy Adams, the only other son of a president to hold the office.
