This is the 54th presidential election in American history. Whether Bush or Gore wins, this will be the closest election since 1884.

If Gore wins Florida, he will rank 45th out of 54 in popular vote, and 49th out of 54 in electoral vote.

If Bush manages to hold on in Florida, he will rank 47th out of 54 in popular vote, and 53rd out of 54th in electoral vote. The only president lower in electoral vote will be John Quincy Adams, the only other son of a president to hold the office.
